Stormwater Management

Stormwater is rainwater or melting snow that flows over surfaces such as streets, driveways, rooftops, and lawns. As this water travels, it can pick up pollutants like oil, fertilizers, pesticides, pet waste, grass clippings, and trash before entering storm drains, creeks, and streams.

Unlike wastewater, stormwater is typically not treated before it reaches local waterways. That means everyone plays an important role in helping protect water quality in our community.

The City of Maize is committed to reducing stormwater pollution and protecting local waterways through our Stormwater Management Program, which operates in compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) requirements.

Residents play an important role in preventing stormwater pollution. Please report any of the following activities to the Public Works Department at 316-722-4854:
  • Dumping substances into storm drains, ditches, streams, or creeks.
  • Allowing vehicle maintenance fluids or cleaning agents to drain into curbs or storm drains.
  • Excessive dirt or mud on roadways from construction sites.
  • Overflowing sanitary sewer manholes.
  • Illegal connections to storm drains, such as processed or wash water.
  • Sweeping large amounts of grass clippings or leaves into streets, storm drains, or creeks.
For emergencies like chemical or fuel spills, please call 911 immediately. Together, we can all contribute to keeping our waterways clean and safe.
