Flooding is one of the most common natural hazards in Kansas. The City of Maize participates in floodplain management to reduce risks, protect property, and keep our community safe.

What is a Floodplain?
A floodplain is the area near a river, creek, or drainageway that can flood during heavy rainfall or snowmelt. Floodplains play an important role in managing stormwater, but development in these areas must be carefully managed to avoid increased risks.

Why Floodplain Management Matters

Floodplain regulations help to:

  • Protect people and property from flood damage.

  • Reduce costly flood losses.

  • Keep natural floodplains functioning to absorb water.

  • Ensure the City remains in compliance with federal and state requirements.

The City of Maize participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which makes federally backed flood insurance available to residents and businesses.

Flood Insurance

  • Standard homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage.

  • Flood insurance is available to all residents of Maize through the NFIP, whether you live in a mapped floodplain or not.

  • Premiums are lower if you are outside a high-risk flood zone.
