Planning & Zoning

The Planning & Zoning Department helps guide the growth and development of the City of Maize to support a safe, attractive, and sustainable community while preserving the city’s character.

The City of Maize is currently updating its Comprehensive Plan, which will help shape Maize’s future growth and priorities. This process is being guided by community input and ongoing conversations about the city’s future.

A Community Open House was held on June 11, 2026, to kick off public engagement and gather feedback on key topics, including neighborhoods and housing, mobility, identity and amenities, and community design in Maize. The same visioning exercises from the Open House are now available through an online questionnaire for those who were unable to attend or who would like to share additional input.

Community feedback is an important part of this process, and residents are encouraged to participate and share their thoughts as the plan is developed.

What We Do

The Planning & Zoning Department is responsible for:

• Reviewing development proposals and site plans.

• Administering zoning regulations and the zoning map.

• Processing rezoning requests, variances, and conditional use permits.

• Coordinating subdivision and platting processes.

• Supporting long-range planning through the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

• Assisting residents, developers, and businesses with zoning questions.

Zoning helps organize land use in a way that balances community needs, protects property values, and ensures compatibility between neighborhoods, businesses, and industry. By managing land use, the City works to:

• Promote orderly growth.

• Protect public health and safety.

• Preserve neighborhood character.

Planning Commission & Board of Zoning Appeals

The City of Maize Planning Commission review development requests and make recommendations to the City Council. These citizen boards play a key role in shaping the future of Maize.  Residents can view information about upcoming zoning hearings, including agendas, staff reports, and meeting details, which are posted in advance for public review.
