Wastewater Management
The City of Maize is committed to providing reliable wastewater collection and treatment services to protect public health, support community growth, and safeguard the environment.
What is Wastewater?
Wastewater is any water that goes down household or business drains—such as sinks, showers, washing machines, and toilets. Unlike stormwater, which flows into creeks and rivers, wastewater is collected through a sanitary sewer system and directed to treatment facilities.
How the City Manages Wastewater
The City of Maize:
-
Maintains the public sewer collection system.
-
Works to prevent overflows and backups.
-
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the city's treatment facility.
- Plans for future infrastructure needs to support growth in our community.

Protecting Our Sewer System
The sewer system is designed to handle wastewater, not trash. Flushing or pouring the wrong items down drains can cause clogs, backups, and costly damage.
Do not flush or pour down the drain:
-
Grease, fats, and oils.
-
Wipes (even if labeled “flushable”).
-
Paper towels, rags, or feminine hygiene products.
-
Household chemicals, paint, or medications.
-
Dispose of fats, oils, and grease in the trash, not the sink.
-
Place wipes and other non-flushable items in the trash.
-
Take household chemicals to proper disposal sites.
-
If you experience a backup, contact the City first to determine if the issue is in the public main or on private property.
